Key Working Relationships
The Senior Program Officer will manage our AI Accountability Program and contribute to ongoing work at our Policy Accountability Lab in Nigeria with a direct reporting line to the Executive Director.
External working relationships will include public and private policy stakeholders at national and subnational levels, public and private audit institutions at national and subnational levels, regulatory agencies, development partners, civil society organizations and media etc
Job Purpose
To contribute to fostering accountability in the design, implementation, evaluation and oversight of AI systems policies in public and private sectors.
Job Description
- Analyze public and private AI policy frameworks, identify implementation gaps and propose effective pathways
- Lead capacity strengthening program design and implementation, advocacy initiatives and partnership efforts on audits of AI systems for biases, inequalities, and systemic injustices in public and private sectors
- Develop and implement education and public awareness program to encourage public demands for accountability on AI systems
- Support public and private policy development efforts to incorporate ethical principles in AI systems frameworks
- Promote transparency and regular disclosure on use of AI systems
- Develop frameworks for detection of biases, inequalities, and systemic injustices, mitigation and reporting for public and private sector stakeholders.
- Collaborate with technical and policy teams to address potential risks of AI.
- Responsible for simulating AI policy outcomes.
- Engage with private and public policy stakeholders to ensure AI systems align with ethical standards and social justice goals.
- Represent the organization at conferences, media appearances and events on matters related to AI accountability
- Maintaining personal networks, and membership of relevant professional bodies
Qualification & Experience
- Minimum of Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, Public Policy, Law, or related fields.
- Specialized training or certification in AI ethics or accountability is an added advantage.
- Measurable Understanding of technical AI concepts and social implications.
- Strong familiarity and proven experience with public and private policy development process at national and sub-national levels.
- Strong familiarity with public and private auditing process, institutions and stakeholders at national and sub-national levels.
- Familiarity with AI auditing tools.

- Ability to evaluate AI models for bias, fairness, and explainability.
- Proficiency in programming languages and tools used for AI development.
- Analytical Skills:
- Problem-solving capabilities to identify and address risks in AI systems.
- Capacity to interpret complex data and communicate findings clearly.
- Communication Skills:
- Ability to articulate technical issues in a way that non-technical stakeholders can understand.
- Proven experience in writing policy briefs and reports.
- Leadership and Collaboration:
- Ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including auditors, policymakers, tech developers, media and community members.
